10 Ways to Transition from a Student to an Adult

Updated: Feb 22, 2020

Most men in University or College believe they are men after turning 18 or 21. However, manhood is all about a person’s actions and their ability to be responsible. It means figuring out the right career path, trusting your intuition, and making the best life decisions.

Your parents might not be convinced, but all it takes is ten steps to turn from a boy into a man.

Change Your Mindset

What does this mean? Start to think like a man by thinking ahead into the future of what an ideal lifestyle means to you. Deciding a major in school is a start, but it is simply the beginning. The motivational speaker T Harv Eker once said, “Thoughts lead to feelings. Feelings lead to actions. Action leads to results.” The moment you start taking responsibility for the negative and positive situations in life, people will start to see you as a grown adult.

Manage Your Finances Like A Pro

Whether you are an intern or work part-time at a fast-food restaurant, you have the power to manage your finances. Here are a few ways to reduce your student loan situation:

  • Lower an interest rate by waiting at least six months after on-time payments and request it.

  • Add 5 or 10 percent additional per month to your payments

  • Pay a few days in advance if you can afford it

After making on-time payments for 1 to 2 years, it is an opportunity to apply for a mortgage, auto loan, or credit card. It does not necessarily make a young adult a grown man, but if done responsibly, it can be the start in the right direction.

Stay Focused Despite Failure

What do most people do when faced with failure? Give up. It is the easiest thing to do, but it can be something we keep doing, keeping us further from our goals.

Here is my theory. Life is like a stock market chart. It goes up and down. Success can’t last forever without a challenge arriving at your front door. Instead of considering it a failure, try to think of it as a way to improve and stay focused. Here are a few ways to change the way you look at failure:

  • Think of how you can do things better next time

  • Be honest with yourself and take responsibility

  • Ask people for feedback like your professor, parents and close friends

The true test of a man is when he can remain centered despite challenges at work, with friends or at school. Once you have a plan, focus on it until it becomes a reality.

Find a Mentor or Father Figure

You can’t navigate through life without an older or experienced person to help. We all need guidance from someone in life that has our best interest in mind. It is a sign of strength rather than a sign of weakness.

Once you find a reliable person, listen to their guidance. Do more listening than talking because you might miss out on a gem of knowledge. Take notes and find ways to help them benefit. For example, recommend a blog that relates to their career or sends an event that is of interest.

A win-win relationship with a mentor is the key to long-term success to remain on good terms.

CONCLUDING THOUGHTS

Be yourself, confident, and stay focused. Life has many distractions that can keep a University student in the same mindset after graduation. It will keep you in the same youthful place while life passes you by.

Embrace being a man mentally, physically, and emotionally. Find a mentor that can help offer advice to your dad or professor who can’t offer. Life has its ups and downs, but it is better to experience it with people that were once in your shoes. Good luck!
